A discreet stair descends from the street to an unmarked door, leading into a marble-clad foyer that marks the transition from the everyday to the ceremonial. Commissioned by the Grand Lodge of California, Síol Studios transformed a basement within San Francisco’s iconic mid-century Masonic auditorium into a contemporary lodge space that reinterprets Masonic ritual through a modern lens. Brass screens, oak flooring, leather, and marble guide visitors through a sequence of unfolding spaces. At its heart, the temple features a circular stone relief on the East wall, composed of marble bands that shift from rough to polished, symbolizing the Masonic journey toward enlightenment. Intersecting barrel vaults, inspired by medieval crypts, heighten the subterranean atmosphere while shaping the light above. Seating integrated into the walls and geometry rooted in Euclidean principles cultivate a sense of quiet reverence. The adjacent spaces include a library, hearth, dining room, and kitchen which support communal gathering and reflection, balancing finely machined finishes with handcrafted detail to complete the ceremonial experience.
