This residence at the water’s edge offers a family of three boating from their backyard and views across the channel and over to the beach to check the surf. Desiring a home where they could enjoy the benefits of beach life and provide a comfortable place to raise their young son, this couple, also, wanted a house that would be rooted in the vernacular of this coastal village but venture a little bit outside the norm. Using the archetypal “gable-roofed box surrounded by a covered porch”, as a point of departure, the design strives to blur the distinction between inside and out. Extending from the ground-level loggia to a contemporary “widow’s walk”, a broad porch weaves itself up and around two shingle-clad boxes creating living spaces sometimes inside, sometimes outside, and sometimes in between.
