Fred Buchbinder, a restaurateur, who opened The Right Bank restaurant on Madison Avenue a number of years ago, joined entrepreneurs Kurt Kluger and Marty Leshaw to start a companion restaurant, The Left Bank.
Mr. Buchbinder commissioned us to transform the dark, wood-paneled room to a bright, open atmosphere, oriented toward the upper-Eastside neighborhood through large windows. The elaborate 30-foot-long bar from the now-demolished Metropolitan Opera House was retained. Huge, colorful, wall hangings add decoration to the interior. The tables are laid out on two levels, divided by a railing system of red canvas, laced to red pipes. These devices splash color in the white room. Cafe chairs and checkered-tablecloths complete the design.
