The collaboration between Semple Brown Design & the chef/owners at the The Kitchen Community set out to transpose the atmosphere of ease and informal elegance of their Boulder location into a second, larger location in Denver's Lower Downtown District. The character of the existing structure, set in the historic Sugar Building, was transformed from a dark and introverted shell into a glowing beacon for inviting exceptional food experiences. Superfluous decorative furnishings were removed away from the storefronts to maximize daylight and reveal surprising architectural details of the past. The new material selections are subdued to create a clean, subtle canvas within a culinary "gallery", while still sparking visual intrigue with texture and color with dark Oak floors, along with Carrara marble and Douglas fir countertops. Honest materiality emphasizes the unique character of the space, allowing finishes to wear gracefully as an homage to the existing rough concrete columns. Simple details with warm reclaimed wood, painted bead board wainscoting, and bright white walls become a familiar setting to the culture of community and food.
