UNESCO threatened the Cape Floral Region’s status for loss of important species three years after its inscription in 2004. Fynbos makes up 4% of the world’s biodiversity in 0.3% of its landmass. The unifying characteristic between the plants is their reliance on natural fire cycles to reproduce. They also generate half of the struggling nations’ tourism income, which makes up 2.4% of sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP.
The project proposes a series of fire breaks to negotiate between the natural fire cycles and human development, create a visual guide in an amorphous mountainscape, and generate a new infrastructure: the Jewelry, for Cape Town, a city of icons.
