We renovated the former Pelican Public House, established in 1872, in the heart of Nothing Hill, hosting the third venue for The Italian Job. This includes a pub, restaurant and the cocktail bar, Salotto 900.
The focus of the project was to retain and rediscover all the original detailing of the time-honored pub interior, whilst giving a twist that accompanies all The Italian Job ventures. This has been accomplished by reworking both the internal and external design and colour palette. With the use of colour and materials, the place has been divided in areas with different functions. A new copper and patterned tiled counter forms is the central focus as you enter the pub. Exposed timber floor, brought back to life, lightened space, the walls and ceiling are finished with blue tones, while brown leather furniture compliment the colour scheme. The restaurant area is divided by meshed copper screens, globe lights hang from the ceiling and walls. The ceiling to the restaurant is clad with tin tiles aged with a white wash.
For the upstairs cocktail bar we created a secret door, concealed behind a bookcase wall. Once inside grey tones contrast the timber panelled walls which cover the room, pewter, silver leaf have been used for a small cocktail bar in the corner. he local use of silver leaf is to emphasis the existing niche design and the new counter cornice. High gloss paint has been used for the ceiling reflecting the chandeliers lights.
The distinctive nature of this renovation project lies within the transformation of the internal fabric of the building, restoring on one hand but also adding, through the use of high quality materials and bold expressions of colour. Respecting the existing building, highlighting its strengths, combining this a fresh new palette we gave new life to this pub, restaurant and cocktail bar.
Our belief that the quality of our surrounding has a direct influence on the quality of our lives, and in a public building the architecture and design modify and can improve the way we socialise. Colours, light, textures and material, in harmony, create a space where its experience becomes very enjoyable.
This is what we strive for as a company, to create an architecture that makes people enjoy being a part of. In this project we had the opportunity to produce two very specific atmospheres. At ground floor with the pub and restaurant, and at first floor with the secret cocktail bar. And the difference in feelings is quiet palpable. We also consider that architecture should be focussed with maximum attention to sustainable sourcing and energy saving, with the aim to recycle and re-use as much as possible. Our project goal was to leave a building which consumed less energy than the one we found.
In this project we are proud that we were able to achieve this by avoiding demolition and retaining as much as possible from the existing fabric of the pub including; floors, stairs, fireplaces, textures of previous wallpapers, facade, timber panelling and selected furniture.
We used recycled materials and where we could not recycle, we specified sustainable ones (e.g. water based paint, ethically sourced wood, energy saving lighting and appliances). Off-site prefabrication was used and on-site construction waste was avoided, retained furniture was refurbished new furniture was purchased second hand from local dealers and distributors. Last but not least, we removed the old curtains that blocked the sun light in order to maximise the amount of natural light inside the building. Natural light is extremely important for public space, elevating our mood, enriching our health, and generally improving our lives.
Mindful of the importance of an environment that addresses the occupants and visitors needs - It should offer a healthy, comfortable, safe and secure environment that’s easily accessible and well suited to its surroundings. We achieved this by creating a comfortable atmosphere, and by studying people flow we reorganised the functions within the space in a more effective way providing the appropriate amount of privacy both for the staff and clientele.
We delivered The Italian Job brand atmosphere (following our work at pre-existing ventures), providing this Notting Hill location a new lease of life, improving dramatically the space, character and overall experience of the traditional pub.
