Title
of the project: ”Cell Capsules for
Sustainable Development of Gadeokdo”We propose an organic urban scenario that
initially appaers as a complex, chaotic structure but is in actuality one that strictly
considers the physical features of the environment and its cultural-historical
heritage.The
urban units are spatial sites simply waiting to be filled with volume, form and
function; constantly changing with time, attaining a new significance,
revealing themselves in a different manner. The unit is a cell, capsule,
membrane, nest, cocoon…The construction of the unit is static while the
substance is dynamic, as if it’s a living organism - open, breathing, growing,
with its own pulsation.
Furthermore if we were to view
Gadeokdo island as a healthy body, then the invading urbanization would
represent an escalating infection. The capsular enclosure of the new buildings
would stop the infection from spreading out. In this sense the design for the sustainable
development of Gadeokdo sets defined spatial boundaries, within which urban
density will be contained and nature will remain untouched.
We
consider in a world where architecture is capable of creating an alternative
reality this could be it.
