The International French School of Sydney is a school with a vision that offers students a truly international experience in education, cultural exposure and community engagement. With a distinct lack of useable active outdoor space, inherited aging facilities and a school community keen to build positive relationships with its neighbours, the principles driving the design were to create an inspirational space for athletic development within the school that would bring about a new approach to building development on the site and invite interaction amongst members of the local community.
Over the course of 3 decades the school has developed as a number of disparate buildings across a large site. The form and scale of this new infill development are designed to redefine places for gathering and arrival. A series of courtyards are created between the new gymnasium and existing building, breathing life into previously under-utilised areas of the school, allowing for a wide range of activities to take place.
Every building element, from the roof panels, to the expressed steel frame to the detail of the acoustic panels is expressed with intention and care to achieve a playful, robust and disciplined architecture.
