Winner of the 2006 AIA Design Award, this project, with a broad range of
contributors and consultants, sets a new standard for the role of
the architect in speculative civic work.
This design progressed alongside the formation of the INCUBATOR
FOUNDATION, a non-profit art advocacy group who?s Board of Advisors includes
architects, artists, actors, and diverse public figures committed to the
cultivation of young artists in the city.
Over nearly two years, a fluid, dialectic, and rigorous design process
explored the potential of this remarkable proposition.
One of the
primary functions of the INCUBATOR is to provide an Artists in Residence
program in which artists are selected by the Public Art Fund and the Old Vic to
live and work in the INCUBATOR. By incorporating
this living and working environment with the gallery and performance spaces,
the INCUBATOR has a cultural vitality that makes it unique among art
institutions. It continually offers new
experiences to visitors from the community and from around the world.
