Robby and Francesca Cantarutti Petricich, architects and designers have managed to fulfill the dream of their life: to design and build their own house on the river Natisone, to Firman, in the province of Udine, near the Slovenian border.
The project stems from a distance, from the many leisure moments of childhood and adolescence before then, after the river that gives its name to the valleys crossing.
Lived as the beach in the summer and as a territory to be explored and on which to build huts in the woods that dot its banks during the other seasons, the Natisone was the incubator of a dream, unaware at first, then finally cherished and strongly desired.
So he took the house-shaped hut Robby and Francesca and the annexed studio where lulled new ideas to achieve more dreams of a life harmonized with the natural environment, able to communicate with it.
The design theme was to respect the environment by seeking a balanced input volumes, remained identical to building existing in a landscape so strongly characterized both by the colors of the surrounding vegetation, both from the clear waters of the river, both by its characteristic ridges conglomerate, to the point of becoming a source of inspiration for the choice of materials and for a correct relationship between empty and full.
The land sqm. 9000 on which stands the artifact is a site of Community and insist on it constraints the protection of the landscape and wildlife. Previously housed a kennel, in its time composed of a series of Stalletti aligned on two rows, one longer than the other, whose plan remembered the shape of a pipe. A little further north there was the gatehouse.
The exhibition is ideal: the longitudinal development is facing east-west, while to the south, announced by a beautiful grove of deciduous, after an overhang of five meters, flows the Natisone, in an area known as "Magredi of Firman ".
For those coming from the dirt road from the north, near the town center, you proceed through farmland in maize and wheat, the building looks like a single body.
In reality it is two independent units joined together by a concrete wall in the exposed face that, in addition to tie the two volumes, form a large portal turned towards the river, constituting the input is the study of architecture, longer and Strait, to the west, is the home, which uses a greater width, to the east.
The latter was designed for a total symbiosis with the river environment: hence the decision to build the high south-glass, extending the already generous size with a large terrace overhanging the cliff.
Just to make the most of the forest and river views in the living area were limited at best opaque walls. The use of glass, in addition to its reflective characteristics, satisfies the chance to take advantage of solar radiation during the winter and to limit the effects in the summer, thanks to the natural shield provided by the branches of the trees of the grove in front.
Among the rooms, facing north, and the living area has been interposed a long corridor that also fulfills the function of wardrobe.
Part of the house was covered with "stone of Muggia. From this border town of Friuli Venezia Giulia, tight bearing karst between Trieste and Slovenia, we extract a sandstone rich in iron. The intention is to exploit the natural oxidation, giving it the characteristic rust color, face to take home the colors typical of the surrounding bush.
The architectural firm is the center of gravity of the creative energies. Here, together with its employees, Robby and Francesca work side by side to design housing solutions and constructive able to respond to diverse needs, always starting from the analysis of the historical, cultural and environmental sustainability which will host the new achievements.
That said it's easy to understand why the choice of the architectural elements that define such an important space. For the coating of the study was used Siberian larch untreated, over time, will be informed on the shades of the forest. Another material used both in coverage and in front of the house and the studio is the Corten, chosen for its strong chromatic affinity with the land.
The conglomerate that gives rise to the cliffs of the gorge Natisone, being nothing but natural concrete, has provided the inspiration for masonry parts made of exposed concrete, ie using the element "evolved" of natural material upon which the entire building.
Even for the floors has made extensive use of concrete in which, the presence of other inert materials and special finishing treatments, always refer to materials found in the surrounding environment and used for centuries in this area.
Finally the gatehouse was rebuilt with a volume becoming identical to the original, the new use, dependence and small tool shed.
