The construction of the small house by Kolybithra beach, only 15 m. away from the sea and with a northwest orientation, dates since 1883. In this existing space of 17 m² and 3,15 m. in height, I was asked to design a small holiday house which should cover the needs of a family of four wishing to experience a simple way of living for a few days, in the summer, in nature, much like a beach-hut. The use of the loft space, a multi-purpose staircase and concrete as a general ‘surface’ material created a space which can respond to the simple needs of a family on vacation by the beach. The aim of the project was to make use of every inch of potential functionality within the space. The materials used had to withstand their coexistence with the sand and the sea - birch wood and concrete - but also reflect the plan of the initial construction upon which it sat.
