The House on the Lake
Each house tells a story that invites you to enter, observe, listen, and absorb. It is here that the architect, with their vision, can intervene to create a new scene!
The lake house is a ’70s cottage that has always been used as a holiday home. After this past use, one of the heirs wanted to make it a year-round home—his home! The need to renovate and revive it to reflect a new, lively, and dynamic personality, catering to his passions and requirements, was a strong inspiration for the project. The shared objective was to make it a home for year-round living, whether in private or with friends.
Due to its location, the villa operates on two opposite but complementary fronts. On the northwest side, the lake’s water, with its blue-green and sometimes gray hues, is so close you feel like you could almost touch it. On the opposite side, to the southeast, a steep slope creates a fully green view. A staircase descends from the road, which remains high above and soon forgotten. Water and greenery thus became the constant dual themes of the project, perceived strongly from the first inspection. From inside, they sometimes alternate, and sometimes overlap.
At the planimetric level, all non-structural elements of the villa were removed to create a layout organized through connections rather than divisions, resulting in a free, comfortable space with rooms that flow into one another and the outdoors. A strong and decisive design gesture gave the house a completely different dynamic and rhythm of life. By closing the entrance porch with two full-height glass walls, a new environment was created: a transparent box within the greenery facing southeast. Here we placed the kitchen, an active and central space for the new owner, carefully equipped and convivial, working in close connection with the adjacent exterior where the house’s historical pergola is located, which we deliberately left untouched. Perfectly integrated with the surrounding green space, the pergola is completely covered with dense wisteria in summer, creating a pleasant place to relax in the shade, enjoying the light breeze from the north. This space welcomed us throughout the entire construction period.
The house is surrounded by other outdoor spaces, each with different characteristics, experienced as extensions of the interior. Among these, a small porch between the master bedroom and the living room becomes a more intimate space overlooking the lake, where one can slowly wake up in the morning or enjoy a relaxing aperitif or after-dinner drink in the evening by the blazing fireplaces.
A terrace below, at dock level, becomes the perfect place for sunbathing. Just slightly higher than the beach, it gives the sense of being on holiday and reminds us of the essence of living in the ‘lake house.’
