From Scrap Yard to Dance Floor

Key words: scrap yard, reclaim, and recycle, holistic approach

From the architect:

Our firm is a profound believer of sustainable and cost effective design solutions. For us designing this project of 2101sq ft discotheque was a true challenge as majority of the material to be used in the project was to be acquired from scrap yards and other such sources; meaning it had to either be recycled or reclaimed material. Our main objective was to use materials which would cause minimal damage or impact to the existing environment such as “eco-friendly materials” and reflect youthfulness via vibrancy & rhythm in the design solution. It is for the first time in the Vadodara city that a discotheque has been designed from reclaimed and recycled material.
The given floor space has been segregated into two segments; one of which is consisting of all the service areas such as kitchen, mocktail bar, DJ Booth and the washrooms and the rest of the area is dedicated to dance floor, sitting and dining area. This effective spatial organization was done in order to achieve smooth functioning of services and also for cost effectiveness of the project.
The project’s highlights are the entrance area - designed with recycled tin lids, use of recycled beer bottles along with recycled paper plantations in the foyer, use of neon color to highlight various elements of design throughout the disco. The ordinary M.S. pipes & metal tree guards have been exclusively used featuring verticality and gradient of light and shadow and the integrated sitting arrangement using refurbished car seats. The recycled barrels are used for trendy mocktail bar counter and the car wheel rim has been used as high chairs. The sink for the mocktail bar is of the recycled two wheeler tyre and the fly ash bricks have been used in the partition. Above all, lot of attention was paid to detailing of the place and the comfort of the users of the place i.e. the human comfort.
We have successfully been able to explore and reclaim materials from the waste and bring in innovation and generate the spark in the ambience of the discotheque through our holistic design approach.
