Heinen’s Fine Foods is the premier, locally-owned grocery store chain in the Cleveland area. Process has been Heinen’s exclusive architecture firm since 2006. The relationship began with an analysis and redesign of their retail image and environment graphics. The last Heinen’s build out involved the unique transformation of an old historic bank into a modern yet beautifully preserved grocery store. The project scope consisted of an interior renovation of the existing first and second floors of the Ameritrust Rotunda and the basement and first floor of the 1010 building interior. Due to the building’s historical significance and its complex interior geometry, designing a functional and aesthetically pleasing grocery store was a challenge. Process’s main goal was to preserve and honor as much of the original architecture as possible while creating a social space where people can shop and enjoy their unique surroundings. The thirteen piers that surround the Rotunda floor were fully preserved with their original marble panels. Marble from the original teller stations was salvaged and used to create custom tables found on second floor. Process chose finishes and other elements of the design that would lightly contrast the original architecture in order to highlight its beauty, not overpower it. This Heinen’s location marks the first grocery store in downtown Cleveland.
