The original Guildford Hotel was constructed in 1885, with extensions in 1914 to the iconic façade. Much of the interior and structural elements of the Hotel were destroyed in the 2008 fire and left the building vacant and exposed to the elements for seven years until redevelopment commenced.
Through the introduction of PGA to the owner of the Hotel the brief evolved with the need to create a unique venue with ties to its original heritage.
The main focus of the redevelopment was the retention of as much of the existing building fabric as possible. The direction for the reconstruction and fitout was to provide linkage between the rich history of the building, and the importance the building had in the local community, with the new proposal.
It was critical to retain the existing heritage façade, however the internal spaces have transformed Hotel into a modern venue, using the features left behind from the fire, creating cavernous voids and retaining much of the existing heritage elements, dispersed with the burnt timbers and new modern steel structures. It would have been easier to demolish and rebuild as new, however this would have led to a completely different design outcome. We chose to retain, rather than demolish and this has really paid off with the final product. Almost everything that remained after the fire was retained, including the walls, existing flooring and most of the venue’s structure.
