Once the epicenter of trade in the Northeast
turned industrial waste land, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn has most recently
become the focus of the City’s developers, politicians, artists, and community
activists. As part of an ideas completion for ‘Connection: The Gowanus
Lowline,’ Approaching the competition as exercise in master planning, Nelligan
White’s proposal includes extending the Gowanus embankment, removing hazardous
waste and restoring the regions ecosystem, and redeveloping the Gowanus Basin
as the canal’s central economic and entertainment hub.
