This project proposes the transformation of a former storage warehouse in Barrington into a contemporary, welcoming, and functional cannabis dispensary. The intervention is based on an adaptive reuse strategy, making the most of the pre-existing spatial qualities—particularly the generous ceiling height—to create a sophisticated and warm environment that redefines the user experience in this type of establishment.
One of the main architectural gestures consists of inserting a mezzanine that organizes the program across two levels. On the ground floor are the public-access areas: the dispensary, an on-site consumption lounge, employee zones, and storage. The upper level, conceived as a light and open structure, houses the offices and internal-use areas, establishing a clear functional separation without losing spatial connection.
This dispensary is designed to attract a high-end, sophisticated clientele from Philadelphia. Hence the high-end interior design approach.
The guiding thread of the design is a three-dimensional metal mesh structure that runs throughout the project. It begins on the exterior, accompanying the visitor from the moment of arrival, and extends into the interior as an organizing element, articulating the various spaces with formal and material coherence. This mesh not only provides visual structure to the space but also reinforces the project’s identity and serves as a support for lighting and vegetation, becoming an integral part of the architectural language.
The ceiling’s metal mesh represents a golden cloud. This idea ties together the character of the space—as a smoke lounge—with the previously stated intent of sophistication and elegance. Simultaneously, the second floor “floats” above the first, with patios that allow natural light to enter while also offering visual connections between levels. The client works in a “cloud” above the dispensary.
To maximize the entry of natural light, strategically placed skylights bathe the interior in soft, zenithal light, generating a serene and natural atmosphere. The use of warm materials, noble textures, and a sober color palette helps create an elegant and welcoming environment, moving away from the stereotypes of the original industrial space and the traditional retail aesthetic.
The result is a space that combines functionality, aesthetics, and experience, projecting a new vision for spaces dedicated to wellness and responsible consumption.
