Creating a living space involves basic elements such as walls, ceiling and the floor. The approach an architect adopts towards these is what defines the space.
Architect Ramesh Edwankar of Ramesh Edwankar and Associates embraced a disparate view while crafting an urban apartment that is also timeless. “The plan is based on vastu shastra for the well-being of our clients,” says Edwankar. The ancient Indian science of space planning ensures a harmonious connection with the environment. Edwankar employed avant-garde design elements and infused technology in the apartment to enhance its appeal.
Typical air condition- ing vents have made way for innovative circular nozzles. Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, have been creatively used in many areas of the home. The 4000 sq ft space has been sectioned into living room, kitchen, four bedrooms, storeroom and a service area. In this one-per-floor apartment building, Edwankar capital-ised on the abundant access of light and cross-ventilation.
A glass façade cuts off the living room from the balcony that runs along its length. Versatile spaces have been created in this expansive room. In addition to the seating area, the room also accommodates a dining segment as well as a bar at the opposite end.
Italian glass mosaic floor-ing defines the seating area and provides a visual break from the Italian white Satvario marble that runs through most of the living room. Edwankar has adopted an unconventional approach while designing the ceiling. He used radical materials like veneer, leather and silver with fibre optic lighting to design it. “We experimented with various materials,” says the architect.
Leather has been extensive-ly used in the apartment. The material upholsters the seating spaces and also covers walls and ceilings in parts through-out the home. The bar counter has been designed in a way as if emerging out of the floor. “We stress on disguising the elaborate workmanship.”Dark brown Italian marble flooring preps up the glass and steel Grandeur kitchen. The bedroom is designed in leather with glass and wood flooring.
