CONCEPT
The cities of our days are the result of a series of overlapping
changes that took place throughout centuries. This has given the metropolis
different layers or “stratums” that have provided the cities with its current
configuration.
Lugo is a great example of these overlapping stratums.
Its richness in history goes back to its Roman foundation, from the Suevi to
the Visigoths and Muslims, up to the present days.
This stratification lids us to a combination of architectural elements of very
unique and different styles that explain us their history through their
materials, constructive techniques and styles.
The proposal emerges from the idea of evocating all these stratums, so they
can become one of the multiple layers of the city created throughout history. The design becomes part of the concept “archaeological stratums”. The main
idea is to create a series of layers that emerge from the preexisting “green”,
so to become a sculptural representation of the different historical periods of
the city of Lugo.
The new design of the landscape emerges as a visual union of the pilasters
of the elevation, being the east the dominant orientation –the west façade has
the same orientation as the church and the remains of the chapter house do.
The new landscape will work not only as a sculptural space but also as part
of the historic ensemble, being contemplative, relaxation, resting, recreational
and educational place…
The creation of this new “layers” or sculptural pieces will foster the
global vision of the cloister from its interior to the exterior, and vice
versa. For this reason new elements will never exceed 1.10 meters high. However,
they will provide the place with a new perspectiv through highs that will allow
not only to appreciate the majesty of the cloister but also the beauty of the
art pieces shown at the perimeter of the cloister.
MATERIAL NATURE
As for what elements concerned, it is important to
conserve the slabs of the pavement, the well and a sundial. Even if they are
well preserved restoration will be done if necessary.
The current tree was not planted with a functional or
aesthetic purpose; that is the reason why we thought to transplant it, provided
that it is economically and ecologically possible.
The pieces that made up the “layers” will be made up
by a metallic tubular structure placed on the surface, being respectful of the
place, the environment and been safe for the users.
Due to the flexibility of the different layers in the
stratum, we thought of a system that could allow different types of roofs that
could be changed, modified or substitute throughout the year according to the
activities that take place here, the changes in weather and its use. The
materials used to achieve this purpose are.
-Lumber
-Variety of lawns
-Variety of Sedum
-Plastics
-Metallic Finish
The system will have safety bindings that will allow
the process of assembly and dismantle of the pieces, as if they were trays for
the lifeless materials. However, for the vegetable materials, such as for the
lawn and sedum, a system made up by a plastic and recycled grille will be used
for the creation of a variety of soils. This will have the advantage of being
elastic, strong and stable.
With this system it will be also easy to place all the
material in an easy and quickly way.
The structure shows a high load resistance, a high security system of
bindings, which guaranty a total stability and a surface free of water
stagnation, due to its great draining capacity. All these are important
qualities for the use of this structure.
Finally, the system may have an automatic drip irrigation system. Due to
the weather in Lugo, indigenous and resistant species will be planted.
The side coating of the pieces at the structure will be elaborated in a
perforating iron sheet. In its interior some lights will be placed to
illuminate at night.
