Located in New York City’s East Village, this penthouse renovation combines two identical one-bedroom units into a single duplex residence within a newly constructed residential building. The Turett Collaborative worked with the client to reconfigure the stacked apartments into a cohesive two-bedroom home, introducing a new vertical connection between the levels that includes both a stair and a stainless steel slide.
At the center of the design is a double-height atrium that links the two floors. A new stair provides a conventional path between levels, while the slide offers an alternative route, connecting an upper-level office to the living and dining areas below. The slide is integrated into the architecture of the space, set within an 18-foot-tall volume and framed by custom glass railings that maintain openness and continuity.
The design balances this more unexpected element with a restrained architectural approach, allowing the slide to read as both a functional feature and a sculptural presence. Positioned in front of a large window, its curved form interacts with light and views of the city beyond, creating a focal point that is both playful and carefully detailed.
Additional spaces, including a game room, office, and terrace with a putting green, support a range of uses within the home. The result is an East Village duplex residence that brings together everyday living and recreation, creating a flexible environment shaped by the client’s interest in both work and leisure.
