Forming the gateway to Columbia University’s Manhattanville Campus, Dattner Architects the triangular “Bowtie” University Forum is a highly visible and anchor component of the new campus. This multipurpose facility features a state-of-the-art 437-seat auditorium to host academic conferences, meetings, and symposia. The Forum’s additional break-out and meeting rooms, faculty offices, and open gathering spaces, including a public garden, cafe, and information center, provide generous shared meeting space the University needs.
The Forum's main lobby, cafe, and retail space establish a public “Urban Layer” at the street level. The glazed façade at the ground floor conceptually and physically opens the building to the public. The auditorium, which functionally requires opaqueness, is expressed with a prefabricated concrete skin. The Forum's four floors host University-wide programs, events, performances, and conferences. A highly visible and iconic component of the new campus, the academic conference center is designed to encourage and support opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and interactions between the University, local community, and the professional world. On its constrained triangular site at 125th Street and Broadway, flexible public spaces occupy most of the ground level—supporting a range of activities, from pop-up exhibits to University events.
