THE FAshionMoUSeum TOKYO
omotesando
street
location
A fashion museum on the local “boulevard” of fashion,
on Omotesando street
in Tokyo,
underlines by itself the meaning and importance of the proposed building. It
would be not only a museum but a local landmark as well. Omotesando street consists of various
departments of fashion “houses” with dinstinct characters, pointing out
indirectly the “standards-quality” that a “house” of fashion, a fashion museum
should have. Following these thoughts, the design of the fashion museum is the
outcome of a contemporary design which focuses on elegance, uniqueness,
inspiration, ethereal movement and the glory of fashion. Its form stands out
among the multiple “fashion buildings” declaring its presence and importance
from one side to the other, inviting the visitors of the area to come in.
form
The design of the tower takes into consideration the
neighboring buildings by keeping a distance from their volumes, in order to
allow proper ventilation and natural lighting conditions. The volume of the
building is the outcome of a rotation similar to the one the building would
have if we allowed the form to be influenced by the prevailing North-NorthWest
winds. In order to create shaded
interior spaces in this volume made of glass, vertical elements are introduced.
shadow-sustainability
These elements can rotate to provide different
lighting conditions in the interior and are clad with photovoltaic panels,
taking advantage of the 100 height of the building and saving energy for the
building’s needs. The vertical elements are also extended on the top of the
tower and function as wind barriers for the Japanese garden and the sky-bar.
space concept
A fashion museum hosts “lives”, presenting fashion of
different periods. Fashion has always been the art of dressing the human body
in a way that except from the aesthetical aspects takes into account practical
factors like the protection and the movement of the body. The interior is
organized as an entity which is continuously developed in parallel with the
history of fashion. The outfit people choose to wear in their everyday life is
part of contemporary fashion, apart from Haute Couture. The use of ramps
between the exhibition spaces reverses the roles as the observer becomes part
of the exhibition for what he wears and therefore is being observed while
visiting the museum.
roof garden
The vegetation of the garden is mainly low, with bamboo trees at the perimeter of the
garden to enforce the outer wind barriers. The choice of Bamboo trees is based
on the plant’s adaptability and speed of growth. Bamboo grows one third faster
than the fastest growing tree. Its size ranges from miniatures to towering
culms of 60 meters
and this diversity makes bamboo adaptable to many environments. For these
reasons bamboo is the fastest growing
canopy for the regreening of degraded areas and generates more oxygen than an
equivalent stand of trees.
