This family house is located in a small village near Prague.
The south-side plot slopes significantly and is relatively thin. The question was how to meet the client demand for a small, sunny garden, which needed to be positioned to avoid the shadows of the buildings on the street.
The design of the house is traditional contemporary in form and there is an emphasis on quality construction and attention to detail. The intent was to prove that it is possible to make a modern house with traditional form.
The basement is partly embedded into the slope, and the main, ground floor is elevated above street level. The south and north façades are completely glass. It was necessary to keep this floor open to let in sunlight and for views from the north and south. The second floor is beneath a saddle roof. In the basement there is a garage, a room for a guest or a majordomo, and a technology room. On the first floor — which is a half-floor above street level — there is the foyer, living/dining room, two guestrooms, kitchen, and bathrooms. On the second floor are bedrooms, bathrooms, and a study room.
The materials of the house are very simple. The basement is made from stone and acts as a foundation for the house. The ground floor is light, with a wooden wall and thin steel columns. The second floor is completely wood and is below the reinforced metal roof. Each material was carefully considered for both the interior and exterior. The interior in particular was designed based on the client’s demand for white, clear, and minimalistic spaces.
