“The Eagle” Cold War Veterans Memorial is an iconic landmark that celebrates the women and men who silently fought the behind-the-enemy-lines battles that fostered the United States of America’s influence over the free world and prevented an all-out war with the opposing communist block. With a sculptural approach, the project proposes an abstract representation of two giant wings that can ideally trace back to those of the American eagle: a clear symbol of freedom. The two silhouettes stand in a face to face position, nearly touching each other. As in the real conflict, these wings represent two fiercely opposing blocks, two different ways to see the world from a political, economic, and strategical standpoint: a confrontation that resulted in a ramping tension that almost brought the world to the brink of total annihilation. The huge dimension of the two sculptures serves different purposes: by walking through them, people will experience the pressure that the war has generated into the souls of the veterans who fought it, while the memorial itself will become a recognizable visual landmark that will attract potential visitors traveling the Interstate 94. Finally, its shining high-tech metal cladding is a symbol of the incredible technological leap forward that the US Armed Forces and the civilian personnel put in place to surpass the communist block and which led to the foundations of modern days sensational engineering achievements.
