The Delta Stack Pavilion
The Delta Stack Pavilion was developed for SCG as the Thematic Pavilion for the Thailand Architect Expo 2026, responding to the theme "Beyond Materials, Into Life."
The project began with a fundamental provocation:
Can building materials serve as the genesis of architecture, rather than merely its subservient components?
Instead of imposing a preconceived form, the design process was initiated through a rigorous investigation into materiality itself. By analyzing the dimensions, installation methodologies, structural behaviors, and lifecycle potentials of SCG’s building systems, the project interrogates how inherent material intelligence can generate spatial configurations.
Among SCG’s diverse product catalogs, roofing materials emerged as the primary locus of exploration. Traditionally deployed as planar, protective elements, these roof components were radically recontextualized as spatial modules capable of articulating atmosphere, choreographing movement, and defining occupation. Their specific installation angles, tectonic assembly logic, and structural interdependencies established the foundational syntax of the pavilion’s architectural language.
Formally, the project draws upon the primal typology of the cave one of humanity’s earliest forms of shelter. Characterized by mass, depth, shadow, and enclosure, the cave archetype provided a phenomenological reference point.
This guided the creation of an environment that privileges bodily perception and temporal experience over mere object-making, achieving a profound sense of immersion through the deliberate iteration of elemental forms.
Through rigorous stacking and repetition, triangular modules aggregate into a complex, layered tectonic structure: The Delta Stack.
This system effectively transmutates discrete industrial products into an inhabitable landscape defined by calibrated porosity, dynamic light and shadow, and fluctuating degrees of enclosure. Eschewing the conventions of a standard trade-show display, the pavilion functions as an immersive spatial environment that invites visitors to navigate, pause, and intimately engage with the architecture.
As light filters through the pavilion’s porous envelope, shifting ephemeral patterns continuously redefine the spatial boundaries. Here, material, structure, and atmosphere are perceived simultaneously, allowing visitors to comprehend building materials not strictly through their empirical physical properties, but through their profound capacity to condition human experience.
Beyond its immediate function as a temporary pavilion, the project critically addresses the lifecycle and afterlife of its constituent materials. The entire structure was conceived utilizing a dry-assembly system, ensuring that all components can be cleanly dismantled, relocated, and reused post-exhibition. By deliberately extending the lifecycle of these elements, the pavilion advocates for a paradigm shift in temporary architecture one anchored in adaptability, circular resource efficiency, and enduring value.
Ultimately, the Delta Stack Pavilion asserts that profound architecture can emerge directly from an intimate understanding of material behavior and construction logic. By elevating standardized building products into the realm of spatial experience, the project explores the symbiotic relationship between material, space, and life, proposing a highly responsible trajectory for the future of temporary architectural interventions.
