Ecotecture was originally approached to provide a design for extension and retrofitting of an existing cottage and through design development, we ascertained that meeting our clients design and performance requirements would be impractical within the limitations of the existing structure. Our clients aspirations were for a sharply modern yet organic nature. A replacement dwelling was designed which challenges the limitations of Passivhaus in terms of outstanding architecture.
The crescent shape of the building allows good orientation from any location within the Curly House. Conceptually, the dwelling is formed from segments which all function as a low energy building. This strategy means the organic form has no detrimental impact on energy performance. As a whole the dwelling generates enough internal heat gains from cooking and occupants in combination with solar gain, to eliminate the requirement for a heating system. The Curly House performs similarly to, but is not, a certified Passivhaus.
