The Cross is a serviced office building in King’s Cross. Clad in stainless steel, the skin forms a continuous envelope folding up the facade on King’s Cross Road and continuing up to form the new roofscape. A roof level conference facility offers views over the London skyline. The radical form for the building has been set by the 'rights to light' angles from the west windows of the Welsh Chapel adjacent to the site. This restraint, which was encountered at an early stage in the feasibility study, was continued through as a conceptual driving point with an attempt to achieve a building which cloaks its own interiority by creating a mask to the simple office layout within. The idea that the public areas in the project allow for a sense of irregularity and diversity in both spatial and material qualities is designed specifically to avoid the sterile modern office environment
