"The Crib at Strathmore is the prototype model of a tiny prefabricated environmentally responsible shelter that can serve as a weekend retreat, as a home yoga studio, as a backyard home office, or in multiples as cabins at an eco-resort. The Crib takes its basic form from traditional American corn cribs. However, here the form is realized as a more modern and sophisticated kit of parts. The Crib at Strathmore contains many features that maximize its small footprint. The glass overhead door extends the view to the outside while the splayed walls and cathedral ceiling increase the interior volume. A sleeping loft is tucked above a jewel-box cabinetry which opens to reveal counter space and storage within. This provides an office space at the Strathmore prototype but can be outfitted as a small kitchen as well. The main structure consists of two shop-fabricated galvanized steel bents that combine the concept of traditional wood timber framing with the structural simplicity of common scaffolding systems. The floor and roof consist of structural insulated panels (SIPs) which are supported by engineered wood and steel beams that span between the bents. Wall panels made of unpainted heat-treated native and sustainable poplar and recyclable translucent insulating multi-layer polycarbonate sheets are weather-stripped and clipped into the framework. The 250 square foot shelter (about 440 square feet including decks and loft) was originally designed for weekend recreational use on a remote waterfront site in Southern Maryland."
