Located on Dravus St & 16th Avenue in Seattle’s evolving Interbay neighborhood, The Crane derives its form from the nearby Balmer rail yard and the shipping containers that glide through. This 7-story residential building features 37 residential units comprised of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom layouts, a commercial office space, and surface parking. With surprising views to the Sound and neighboring Queen Anne and Magnolia, its South facing orientation maximizes daylighting and views throughout. Certified LEED Gold, the project also includes green roofs and solar arrays.
With various walkable destinations nearby, it was important to celebrate its gateway corner and provide a pleasant, neighborhood scale. By incorporating an entry plaza and a two-story height entry space with a custom mural, the corner is activated, and the entry is warm and inviting. Elements indicative of the railway and cranes are used throughout the interior, including unit identifiers in the corridors and the lobby staircase.
