Tasked with building a family home on a Nantucket site set back from the oceanfront and fully shielded from view by the landscape, Workshop/APD devised a uniquely modern indoor/outdoor residence that cleverly directs all views – and activity – inward to a jaw-dropping central courtyard lush with native plantings, abundant al fresco living spaces and a zero edge swimming pool. Thanks to its well-screened site, the team was able to push the boundaries of modern architecture on Nantucket, though its simple, shingled gable forms refer back to the island’s earliest Shaker structures. The home’s cool, neutral, minimal interiors, elevated by bespoke and gallery furnishings, statement lighting, and a cohesive, luxurious material palette of wood, natural stone and dark metal, stand in dramatic contrast to the garden’s bold hues, creating a comfortable retreat on hot summer days.
