“The Complexity of a Dome”, Belgorod, Russia
The objective is the proposed building to recover its aspect through architecture, as a source element. That is to be able to “narrate” about the form possibilities, the adventure of movement through space, the light and the expression of a concept; a building where its apprehension is through, its concept mighty, its form determinant.
The building consists of a main volume that follows the contours of the old monastery.
The anthropocentric character of Byzantine church, expressed through the dome, reappears through the circular subtraction of the primeval solid.
The final formation with the potent contour and the courtyards determine the relation of the architectural proposal with the history topics, through a contemporary approach.
The subtracted volume is been transformed from mass to space, is taken up by light, it is converted to a creative element of the building.
The gesture of subtraction penetrates the floor of the courtyards leading the light to the base level of the building.
The horizontal stripes accentuate the linearity of the building. Furthermore they operate as boundary in the front of the glass facades, reserving the privacy while they allow to the natural light to penetrate in the interior.
At the area of the old church ruins and the surrounding buildings (small church and administrative building of the church) a new square is given to the city.
The open space around those buildings becomes the new public space, which transmits potent messages associated with the place and corresponds its historical meaning. It opens the building block to the city, while it does not antagonize the central square of the city.
The aim is the proposal of a building, which expresses its era and becomes a new symbol of the city by incorporating the particular demands of the place.
