2006 AIA Toledo Honor AwardThis home is located on a peninsula known as Catawba Island, a popular resort area in the Western basin of Lake Erie. Views of the nearby islands and the lake have been the primary generators of the organizational aspect of the plan and its orientation to the site. The house sits atop a stone outcropping in "The Cliffs" approximately 20 feet above the lake, with living areas and kitchen oriented along an axis which terminates to the north with a view of Perry's Monument on South Bass Island.Designed as part of a family compound, the house provides ample space for sleeping and gathering areas for parents, children and grandchildren, with consideration for privacy and separation. The shape and details of the structure were derived from the vernacular of earlier lake side homes and farm houses of the region. Stone was selected to match the indigenous "sugar" native stone of the area which has been used on many nearby older Catawba cottages and homes. Interior materials have been selected to provide a relaxed and informal atmosphere conducive to family gatherings.
