The Cliff Cafe is a vivid architectural project with an upside-down umbrella structure, located by Trat (one of the provinces in the region of eastern Thailand) seaside. Architectural Design by Everyday Architect & Design Studio, a design studio that always questions contemporary vernacular architecture in Thai society.
As this design project has a site located in the seaside area, Everyday Architect & Design Studio chooses to study contemporary Thai vernacular architecture and landscape architecture such as a group of public beach umbrellas by the sea. that provides living services that Thai people are familiar with along the seaside all over Thailand
Because when the umbrella stands alone Will not function much in use But when many umbrellas come together, This will become a large architecture that covers the usable area well and receives the wind from the sea easily.
As a result, Everyday Architect & Design Studio intends to use the character of using the space and the shade of this group of beach umbrellas in the new design by choosing to use the Grid Umbrella Structure as the main approach in the design of the building structure. which is similar to beach umbrellas that are connected. The design is 2 buildings that are placed side by side, the order-taking area and the indoor seating area, with the design of a table in the middle in front of the glass filled with sand as a gimmick.
meanwhile, The umbrella structure is designed in the same way, but in a smaller size. Made from a simple steel tube frame. And thatched with blue canvas like a regular beach umbrella spread and cover the exterior of the main building
Harmonizing this indoor structure, both outdoor and indoor buildings, creates a homogeneous architectural design and functional space. And can describe all the umbrella structures in this project. Storytelling as islands in the sea of Trat Province (Trat Province's slogan is the city of half a hundred islands) is placed on the landscape of the sky.
Building textures use contemporary local decorative techniques such as scratch patterns on the cement surface to resemble wood patterns, painting over with bright yellow, and trimming the edges with orange to make it look vivid; the interior walls are used as a loft gray cement surface.
As highlighted, the ceiling of the building is also the shape of the upside-down umbrella and chooses to use a loft color that is mixed with blue paint. This makes the ceiling of the building look like the sky is the real sky behind as a perfect harmony between the architecture and nature.
