Cultural processes in Babahoyo have traditionally been carried out inland, in the city. Strengthening the idea that art and culture can only be developed on land. Forgetting that the river is not only a space for mobility, but also a public space that has been inhabited for centuries, but currently neglected by many...
Located in Babahoyo, a river city that has experienced a progressive deterioration in its floating habitat; reducing its number from 250 to 25 floating structures during the last decades. The traditional techniques of inhabiting the river have been recognized as an Intangible Heritage Asset of Ecuador for their pre-Hispanic origins, identity and historical value. However, little or nothing has been done by local authorities to preserve the habitat, the traditional techniques and protect the families that have inhabited the river for decades. El Candelabro seeks to be an urban cultural reactivator, through a mobile floating platform; achieved through the interdisciplinary self-management of local musicians, architects, graphic designers, producers and photographers.
The 4m x 4m platform sits on a structure of metal tubes, under which 16 reused plastic tanks are anchored. The lateral pillars are made of a lightweight metal and wood hybrid structure, to which the upper modular screens are anchored, which in turn support the textile structure that gives shape to the urban lantern. To avoid imbalances in the platform, caused by the winds of the river, an inverted truncated pyramid shape is proposed. Its modulation allows for easy assembly, disassembly and transportation during cultural events.
El Candelabro explores possibilities that revalue water resources in Latin American river cities through collective work and art. Acting as a neighborhood repairer that raises awareness, reactivates and promotes a sustainable cohabitation between the city and the river.
