The New Modern Library seeks to create an environment that is inclusive of all members of the public alike, providing an open, accessible and relatable local amenity. It creates an opportunity for people to enjoy the site’s waterfront setting providing a sheltered and relaxed landscape for people to congregate within or enjoy in solitude.
The library is raised and separated into a series of elements that respond to their context, liberating the landscaped ground plane within which members of the public can discover different parts of the library from below. The fluid landscape extends into the building as a ribbon of circulation giving people an opportunity to interact with the library’s different functions.
The orientation of the elements maximises the site’s location with its uninterrupted southern aspect and views across the waterfront. The spacing of the elements reduces overshadowing utilising the ample natural daylight.
