This was the project for a
new police headquarters at Muggia in the province of Trieste. The area sited is
in Muggia, near the historic center. There were no existing structures of
value.
The project was conceived
as a “machine”, given the particularity of the building itself and its functions,
requiring particular strategies for security. It was necessary to refer to the
client for indications and, with regard to the contents and the
distributive-functional aspects, to the guidelines for planning typical
infrastructures as drawn up by the Ministry for Public Works, General
Management of State Buildings and Roads and the General Command of the
Carabinieri, III Department, SM – Logistics Office, in May 1986.
The project was drawn up
bearing in mind the requirements proposed and more precisely different areas
were determined for specific uses:
for personnel;
for vehicles;
as quarters for staff;
as residences.
The solution provided a
single building divided into 3 blocks, separate but connected, which exploit
the geometry of the plot. The space and volumes were exploited for maximum
performance and flexibility, and to separate the different functions.
Given the theme, the
facades too were sober and severe. The main entrance, however, opens onto the
main street, where a wall completely made of glass – to show the necessarily
open relationship with the public – is protected by a paratactic wall with a
metal grill.
