A design competition entry for the renovation of the renowned Frank Jones Brewery in Portsmouth, NH. Great emphasis was given to the sustainable aspect of the proposed design. Another major consideration was the historical significance of the existing structure; although not registered under the National Register of Historic Places, it is of major importance to the local community. The program required a mixed-use solution, which included commercial and retail spaces at ground level and residential units above. The proposal should abide to local zoning and code regulations. Our approach was to keep the existing building shell and renovate the interior (including structure). The overall character of the building was kept, while giving the building a contemporary aesthetic. This being an old brewery, we drew inspiration from the process of making beer. During the process individual materials are processed and combined in order to derive a complete end product. In a similar manner, the building components come together and are mashed together in order to produce a highly functional building that meets all its requirements.
