For the conversion of an 102-year old barn into offices for the design agency and publishers of the magazine Aortica, The Borsellinos, the existing traditional structure was juxtaposed with modern features. The exterior and the new roof were coloured dark as a contrast to the adjacent buildings. Newly positioned, frameless windows communicate a modern aesthetic. In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior with walls all in white features a large, specially designed multifunctional furniture unit, accommodating storage, kitchen, bathroom and mezzanine. The autonomy of the structure is emphasised as it is positioned orthogonally free-standing, non paying attention to the sloped angles of the existing structure. The project was designed together with architect Fabian Mainzer and executed in close collaboration with the owners. Services provided included design development and construction documents.
