At the boardwalk a simple plaque identifies the memorial. Individual
rays of light stream from finely perforated panels. Inside both the
floor and ceiling are clad in unpolished white marble reminiscent of
ancient construction. The canopy hovers in the open air 12’ above the
boardwalk, supported by structural glass and steel columns discreetly
located within the body of light. Atop the roof a solar
array generates the electricity to sustain 6 Million Incorporeal
bodies. A single ray of light shines for every Jewish life lost to the
atrocities of the holocaust. Collectively, the rays of light enclose a
space of unanticipated serenity amidst the crowds on the boardwalk.
Ghostly figures move within the body of light. Through these walls is a
temple to the living body, a space of visual isolation, containing
simply the individuals who occupy the memorial at any one moment in
time. Distinguished by the absence of any markers or
artifacts to collect attention, the solace provided by the memorial is
derived when our gaze falls on one another, and we receive a unique
moment to recognize the solidarity of all life.
