The Blue Room is a contemporary script regarding the lives of
intertwined couples who wrestle with issues of desire, intimacy,
faithfulness, and sex. The dramatic structure demands a fluid, liquid
environment that shifts between locations and emotional metaphors. The
action occurs in 10 different locations, suited for intimate encounters,
illicit or concentual. Inspired by a mosaic-tile ribbon that unfurls through a Florentine hotel
lobby, we designed a white translucent ribbon, back lit with
color-changing fixtures to articulate the space. Evocative of the
cyclical narrative and the unraveling lies and truths, the ribbon
created multiple spaces, as if seen from different perspectives. We
achieved dramatically differing visual appearances with minimal
dressing, and jarringly stark lighting and color choices.
