The client, a couple, approached us to have their apartment interiors refurbished. Since the apartment was closer to their toddler's new school and the town, they made the decision to move in after a couple of years of renting it out.
The apartment appeared to have a rigid floor plan with a sizable utility terrace through the kitchen primarily being used as a storage space. A wall separated the kitchen and living area, which inadvertently constricted movement. We resolved the lack of openness and connectivity by removing this wall, and relocating the kitchen to the utility area, thereby creating a dining area in its place.
This expanded open floor plan resulted in an exciting space for a bookshelf and a bar counter that served as the living room's focal point. It also improved the composition of spaces by unifying the kitchen, dining and living areas.
The civil work included redesigning of the flooring with a new material palette inspired by the client’s love for traditional wooden furniture coupled with an earthy and rustic sense of materiality. Grey flooring in conjunction with wooden furniture brought about the primary theme for the interiors.
Moroccan blue tiles help achieve a sense of playfulness and vibrancy by demarcating the kitchen and balcony floors, as well as the panel on the bar counter to elicit contrast. Parallel brass inserts embedded into the floor crawl onto the walls and wrap the living area. Blue pottery handles from Jaipur on consoles and storage units spread the blue accent in the furniture. Cane shutters are introduced in the bookshelf and on the side of the bar counter to reinforce the rustic materiality in a contemporary manner.
In contrast to the grey flooring across the apartment, wooden flooring was adopted in bedrooms to evoke a sense of warmth. Wardrobes, due to their overwhelming presence, were muted with shades of grey. The blue accent seeps into the guest bedroom in the form of a blue strip inlaid in the headboard, and in a blue shelf.
The daughter’s room was oddly in the shape of a quadrant, with its external wall forming an arc. In order to enhance the inherent geometry of the room, the wardrobe and the table were designed along the profile of the curved wall. The bed was aligned to one of the radial walls, leaving the central space in the bedroom undisturbed by furniture, thereby making room for an inclusive play area. The window, being the only source of light into the room, was accompanied by a curved and cushioned seating.
The apartment was soundproofed from the noises of the bustling city by incorporating a second layer of openable windows which behaved as effective acoustic barriers.
