"The Bamboo Grove" is the design entry of Beijing Forestry University for the 2023 Chengdu Park City International Garden Season and the 6th BFU International Garden-Making Week. The Garden Season is the only national professional competition for universities and colleges recognised by the Chinese Higher Education Society with the theme of garden design. The theme of the competition is "Garden of Vitality", and the design team will complete the on-site construction of the "The Bamboo Grove" bamboo garden in 3.5 days, using raw bamboo and plants as the main materials. The garden will then be officially opened to the public for free in the form of an exhibition at Yima River Park in Longquanyi District, Chengdu, China.
"The Bamboo Grove" is a "spiritual" expression of the state of walking through a bamboo grove. Inspired by the minimalism of Chinese Song Dynasty aesthetics, the design team wanted to express a rich and vibrant experience in a low-tech and pure language that pays respect to the infinite spiritual power of natural beings.
Under the concept of returning to simplicity, "The Bamboo Grove" breaks the constraints of the site and combines the traditional minimalism aesthetic with modern demands for simplicity, practicality, and safety. Through the use of the simplest construction design, it cleverly combines 30 straight bamboo poles with a height of 5 meters, bamboo tube sound devices, and low reeds to simulate the experience of walking and resting in a bamboo grove. By incorporating interaction between people and nature, the design achieves both the effects of simulating a bamboo grove walking experience and conveying practical safety considerations.
The main placement of bamboo is designed based on the experience of the path, such as the rhythm of light and heavy, and the aesthetic principles of the Song Dynasty. The bamboo tube sound devices are made to produce sounds through shaking, enriching the experience of walking through the bamboo grove. Plants are used to enclose and obstruct the line of sight, maintaining a relatively complete experience of strolling through the grove. At the same time, at the end of "The Bamboo Grove," the team set up a secluded space where visitors can rest, stay, and look back, breaking the linear impression of the structure as just a passageway and greatly enriching the experiential sensation.
As an ancient building material, bamboo plays an important role in China's architectural history. The team hopes to showcase the charm and value of traditional bamboo construction culture to the world through this project, while also contributing to the inheritance and promotion of bamboo culture in China.
