The Avenues Youth Project was set up in 1979 to provide leisure facilities for the area’s children and young adults and to offer them the chance to learn new skills. By 1996 the Youth Club had outgrown its premises and the Trustees appointed Hans Haenlein Architects in October 1996.The new building is designed on two floors. It has a high thermal capacity to meet the current energy standards and is fully accessible to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination legislation. The planning of the internal accommodation is compact and the building occupies the total site area.In commenting on the design English Heritage congratulated the Planning Department of Westminster City Council for allowing ‘an unashamedly modern building (which makes) a welcome addition to the Conservation Area’.Received the Civic Trust Awards 2004 - Mention
