Situated in front of the Busan Rail Station in Dong District of Busan Metropolitan City, Korea, the project is part of larger public works aimed at revitalizing the original downtown area of the City. Covering over a 3.12-square kilometer area with a total budget of 28 billion KRW, the proposed design for the Busan Rail Station Square aims to initiate the transformation of the original downtown area by injecting new arts, culture, education, commercial, and recreation uses and facilitate an environment in which cross-pollination of various industries are promoted.
The design approach for the project began with the idea of creating an open and inviting urban destination for all people and envisioned an urban park and square where gently sloping green hills and vast open space invite people to rest and play, a place where a floating park protects from the harsh sun on a hot summer’s day and pouring rain on a cold winter’s night, and a place where underneath the floating Park’s greenery and soft light hosts a place for nourishment, learning, and communication.
The design comprises three main elements – Floating Park, Urban Square, and Urban Kiosks. The Floating Park is a landscaped roof covering the Arts and Culture Square in front of the Busan Rail Station. With its gently sloping green hills and ‘Urban Kiosks’ of various sizes and designs imbued into the landscape, the Floating Park is designed to serve as a place of leisure for the people of Busan and visitors alike. Underneath the Park’s greenery is the Urban Square, a hosting site for various events. The Urban Kiosks serve as venues for various activities and consist of free-standing structures of varying enclosures and volumes serving temporal events, erected and disassembled as needed.
