The Anthracite house is located along a quiet residential street in Indonesia. It is a 2-storey detached house with a basement. From the street, the Anthracite House looks like a singular metallic dark grey volume floating over the land. The shape of the land allows for 2 longitudinal bars to be designed across the site, connected by a linkway and a sculptural staircase.
The architectural and interior design concepts for this family home are centered around creating a modern and contemporary space that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, providing a calming and relaxing environment for the family, especially for the client who travels frequently for work.
As land space is limited, the design strategy to incorporate as many landscape elements as possible was conceived in all surfaces.
The building's existing 6 m high boundary walls make it nearly hard to plant trees around the perimeter. Hence, these walls were then conceived to be green walls, where staggered volumes of greenery are interspersed so that the users can enjoy view to some greenery from the interior.
Adding landscape elements to the Basement, which does not get sufficient natural lighting, was another challenge. Hence, a void at the 1st storey lawn was created to provide a source of light for the basement and works as a water courtyard, at the basement level. The sound of the falling water from the 1st to the basement evoke the sense of calmness within the house.
The overall design approach for the new building is centred to ensure natural cross ventilation and capturing as much natural daylight is achievable:
· Taking advantage of north-south facing, breeze corridors via setbacks are created to the left and right side of the house, to ease cross ventilation.
· 2nd storey volume cantilevers over 1st storey to provide deep overhangs, to provide shade to the 1st storey.
· Deep punctuations / openings are created on the 2nd storey to provide for sun shading purposes for the playroom.
· Ventilated façade on the 2nd storey was designed to reduce thermal load within the house.
· Internal Courtyards, Water Court and Vertical green walls are created to reduce temperature.
The interior spaces are thoughtfully designed to capture glimpses of the exterior landscape whenever possible. For instance, in the living room on the first storey, a majestic bonsai or travertine wall serves as a backdrop, creating visual continuity with the surrounding gardens. The powder room, too, incorporates elements of the exterior, such as the use of travertine stone for a cantilevered basin and grey tinted mirrors that represent the travertine in a different tone. The design of the powder room door, with bronze stainless-steel plates and mirrors, adds an element of permeability, creating a sense of transition between spaces.
One of the key design principles is the extensive use of glass and slim-profile aluminium windows on the first storey. These windows allow unobstructed views of the garden on both sides, making the interior space feel connected to the exterior landscape. Even with the windows closed, the users can still enjoy the lush surroundings, fostering a sense of openness and harmony with nature.
The staircase is a standout feature in the design, situated at the center of the house and flanked by bars on each side. It is perceived as a standalone sculpture that serves as both a functional element and a lighting feature. The staircase is crafted with high-quality materials, including Paloma Limestone for treads and risers, smooth polished plaster for the balustrade walls, and light-colored ash veneer for the handrail. This choice of materials contributes to the timeless and elegant feel of the home.
The interior spaces are orientated to light well and landscape features are always present at vertical connecting stairs and elements. A huge vertical greenery was designed to adorn the existing 8m high wall to allow for more foliage to be enjoyed on the 2nd storey, staircase as well as the interior spaces at the basement level. E.g., Spa Room.
Overall, the design of this family home is a harmonious blend of modern aesthetics, functionality, and a strong connection with nature. The use of natural materials, sourced mainly locally, and the integration of landscape elements contribute to the house's timeless appeal, ensuring it ages gracefully and provides a serene and relaxing environment for the family to call their home.
