2 large roof gardens on the 16th & 17th floors of a River Thames modern penthouse in E16 above Thames Barrier view every major landmark in London. Cable cars, O2 Dome Canary Wharf, topped by Thames Barrier and its adjacent park designed by French landscape architect Allain Provost.
The park with its wave Yew hedges & natural materials, as well as the Barrier’s contours inspired our rooftop design. Artificial grass in 2 kinds mimics the park’s lawns, while granite and hardwood reiterate the waterfront details. The tree planters emulate the Barrier’s outlines. We have since stopped using synthetic grass, and only incorporate sustainable materials.
The residence features 2 sizeable roof terraces, where we repeated the design in both rooftops for unity. Tibetan cherry trees are cultivated inside the Barrier planters, top mulched in blue slate, lit & drip irrigated. The exterior is powder-coated in a light-grey and the interior in a dark-grey. Low curved 2-metre vases repeat the O2 Dome’s apex (O2) in an upside-down fashion, featuring grasses, herbs & spurges.
In this one-off project, we included a new powder-coating approach to create wave troughs. By tracing a curve between 2 blue tints on the front, we restated the river water, the Barrier and Provost’s park hedges.
Life in a high-rise flat entails rooftop garden hardiness, where wind, heat & pollution inundate the outdoor spaces all year. We chose coastal Mediterranean plants which cope brilliantly in such tough conditions.
Tamarix, Syringa, Stipa, Santolina, Salix, Rosmarinus, Pittosporum, Pinus, Phlomis, Phillyrea, Olearia, Lonicera, Lavandula, Hebe, Grevillea, Gazania, Frangula, Euphorbia, Chamaerops, Ceanothus, Beschorneria, Astelia & Acca.
Grand sunsets above Canary Wharf, the river, cable cars & aeroplanes at City Airport make this place a buoyant scene. The 17th-floor terrace takes the most benefit of this position with views of the garden below, River Thames and cityscape, situated readily outside the master bedroom.
