From a far, the spectators residing around the designed dwelling in Vadodara can spot an all red earthy textured with an undulating arrangement and white looking envelope mass. On viewing closer, the playful dwelling’s façade is actually clad from vernacular material clay tiles, which have been arranged in patterns and fixed perpendicular the wall surface. This distinctive façade screening for a residential project for a family has reinterpreted the material suitable for Indian climate and social surrounding context into contemporary outcome.
The dwelling breaks down the scale while offering a variation of massing cubes as a new neighborhood. Creating recessed profiles, gave rise to a large surface treatment area at the central corner junction of the dwelling, alongwith large terrace gardens at various levels. This brings natural daylight and air through windows within the built form to its advantage. The configuration of cubes reflects the symmetry of boxes with human scale that adapt to a varied and dense small scale surroundings. Openings are covered with canopies which bring shade and a visual connectivity across the mass.
The design of the house comprises 3 large voids: front entrance, overhead open terrace garden and side balcony, spanning on 2 floors and separating the interiors from the streets outside, and a central double height lightwell. Barrier free spaces designed inside have visual connectivity and smooth spatial transition while ensuring that all function have their privacy.
The material palette of the house combines traditional material such as clay roof tiles with contemporary ones like glass and metal sections.
A natural material, which is both economical and has long life span, is opted for the front façade for the residence in the form of crafted screen. The earthy texture of clay features out cubic patterns, which sunshades the large surface area and results in urban heat island for the surrounding.
A dramatic makeover, has been created for the corner junction on the South – East façade of the house. The façade now serves as an eye catching element in itself for the dwelling and is clad in the local identity of the indian climatic context : clay roof tiles.
Various combinations and patterns were explored that developed experience of numerous shadow movements throughout the day according to sun’s movement in Indian context. An illusionist character of the pattern reflects the various shadow angles created during the daytime. The screen protects the whole dwelling from severe sunlight maintaining a cool ambience into the interiors.
Pattern depicts, intricate strips carved out from flat clay roof tiles of different sizes. These pieces are all glued together to create one module each. Initially after one module getting ready, through artisanship, a study of shadow patterns were carried out in the studio as part of research to understand the large shadow scale to be obtained. Beauty of the module generates number of shadows through the profile and enhances the artwork.
The arrangement of each clay module generates curiosity to experience and visual the numerous shadow patterns displayed within module. At various time slots, the natural light creates not only interesting shadows but also, effect of hanging elements from the rooftop hung in gardens. Moving pixel effect, through shadows assigns a distinctive character to the screen saver house.
