The existing building is located in Rome on the banks of the Tiber River, in a sports area surrounded by pleasant greenery. The program involves the construction of a sport clubhouse, using part of an existing structure and realizing a new building.
The project is characterized by a horizontal development, organizing the swimming pool and guest areas on the lower level and developing all the members’ functions on the upper floor. A new swimming pool has been built, and the existing volumes are reduced to facilitate the flow of water in case of flooding; the first floor extension is built with a steel structure and includes dressing rooms, spaces for communal use and a large terrace.
The new building joins the existing one and integrates it, changing its functions and its appearance. The volume covering the pool is supported by steel beams with a span of 31 meters that lighten its perception, making it appear as if the volume is suspended over the transparent box that contains the pool. The upper floor shifts back to accommodate the natural contour of the land that rises from the river bank to the floodplain and embankment. A system of skylights allows natural light to illuminate the interiors spaces of the first floor, while the presence of stretched windows on the walls invite the users to enjoy the skyline and the surrounding landscape.
