In the design process for this beautiful award-winning $120 million Recreation Centre, SAHURI + Partners consulted closely with multiple community and special interest user groups, as well as with technical and operational participants. The 185,139 sf. facility was created with a vision of providing a 'social heart' and a gathering place for the community. The four NHL sized hockey arenas were designed through a collaborative design-build approach, led by SAHURI, and are accessorized with dressing rooms, multi-purpose and tournament rooms, and main and second floor viewing areas. Other attractions are the state-of-the-art aquatic facilities, an indoor track, fitness centre, climbing wall, child minding and development areas, multipurpose meeting rooms, flexi-hall, lease spaces, and designated areas for public art. The aquatics facility is loaded with activities for visitors, including a leisure water park and wave pool, waterslide, lazy river, sauna, steam room, whirlpools, and a 53 meter pool for lane swimming. The versatile flexi-hall is designed to accommodate three separate ball courts or to be opened into one large indoor soccer field. Since Terwillegar opened its doors in 2010, the project has achieved LEED® Silver Certification and has been awarded multiple times for its thoughtful accessibility and outstanding design, while accommodating a wide variety of events and activities for the Edmonton community.
