Nestled in a scenic parkland setting, the Terrace House is a stunning 5,300 square foot residence situated on a steeply sloped site in Washington, DC, USA. This modern home boasts a unique design that seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings, offering breathtaking views of the adjacent park.
SITE CONTEXT
House is situated on steeply sloped, previously undeveloped land, originally part of a large lot occupied by a Tudor style mansion. Surrounding properties are mainly colonial in style, constructed in the early to mid 20th century. House is oriented towards Rock Creek Park to the West and North, downhill from property, affording it spectacular views.
MASSING STRATEGY
Site conditions dictate massing strategy, with primary building mass bridging between lower grade at front and higher grade at rear. Overall difference in elevation is approximately 20 feet between the front and rear walls of the main house volume. Living room volume steps down from main level, affording it taller ceilings and access to light and views on three sides. With its smaller scale, font volume establishes a dialogue with massing of nearby Tudor mansion.
ORGANIZATION OF INTERIOR SPACES
Interior spaces are organized around centrally located stair connecting all levels. Stair also provides easy access to 2nd floor level roof deck over the one story living room level and 3rd floor home office/lounge. While circulating up/ down the house, occupants experience privileged views over the hillside, surrounding neighborhood, and parkland. Family bedrooms are located on the 2nd floor, with two additional guest bedrooms located on the lower level and rear portion of 3rd floor.
CULMINATION OF INTERIOR SEQUENCE
The 3rd floor office/lounge affords tree-house like views on two sides, re-establishing the connection to the traditional fabric of the neighborhood by putting it on display.
